In early May 2025, the Higgs family ranch in Fremont County, Colorado, experienced a devastating loss when 15 cattle died suddenly, exhibiting seizures before collapsing. Despite extensive investigations, including tissue analyses and environmental testing, the cause of death remains undetermined.

On May 8, 2025, Kerri Higgs discovered 15 of her cows dead in a single day. Initial assessments suggested sulfate poisoning; however, subsequent tests from Colorado State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory found no significant lesions or contaminants in water sources. The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission conducted drone surveys using optical gas imaging to detect potential emissions from a nearby oil pad, but no conclusive evidence has been reported.

The sudden loss of 15 cattle has resulted in immediate financial losses estimated between $50,000 and $70,000 for the Higgs family, with potential long-term losses up to $250,000 due to the lost future productivity of the heifers.

The mysterious deaths in Colorado have drawn parallels to similar unexplained cattle deaths in Wyoming. Rancher Clint Snook reported that over 40 of his cows died suddenly in a specific pasture near Devils Tower, exhibiting similar symptoms. Despite investigations, no definitive cause was determined.

The recurring nature of these unexplained cattle deaths raises concerns about potential environmental factors or unknown pathogens affecting livestock in the region. Authorities continue to investigate, emphasizing the complexity of the situation and the need for thorough analysis to prevent future occurrences.
